Public rights of way are recorded in a document called the definitive map and statement. By law every surveying authority (a local authority that has responsibilities for highways) must have a definitive map and statement (DM&S) and it
must be open to public inspection during normal working hours.
So, what does the DM&S show?
The classes of highway shown on the DM&S are as follows
Footpath - a route for walkers
Bridleway - a route for walkers, horse riders and cyclists, although cyclists must give way to other users.
Restricted Byway - is the same as a bridleway but vehicles that are not mechanically propelled can also use.
Byway Open to All Traffic (BOAT) - is a highway for all classes of user, but it is mainly used as a footpath or bridleway
